DOWNERS GROVE – The instructions to Chris Eck at halftime were simple – get to the hoop.

The Hinsdale Central junior did precisely that after the break to help lift the Red Devils to a 45-42 boys basketball win against Wheaton North on Jan. 16 at Downers Grove North’s Winter Classic shootout.

“We talked about him [Eck] just trying to be more aggressive getting to the basket, and I thought he did that and did a nice job making good decisions,” Central head coach Nick Latorre said. “We stayed the course getting the ball to Pete [Blust] inside. They did a great job on him but we kept chipping away.”

Eck scored the first nine points of the second half for Central (9-7) as it pulled away from a 17-17 halftime tie.

First came a 3-pointer from Eck for a 20-17 lead, then back-to-back conventional three-point plays as part of a 16-2 run that gave the Red Devils a 33-19 advantage. Blust had back-to-back layups and Trevor Hamilton a 3-pointer during the stretch.

Wheaton North’s 14-4 surge that bridged the third and fourth quarters cut Central’s lead to 37-33 with 3:41 to play, but the Red Devils made enough plays down the stretch to hold on for a much-needed victory.

“Coming off a back-to-back loss weekend [the previous] week, we needed this one in the worst way,” Latorre said. “It was a good team win. I thought we showed some grit. We were able to hang in there with a good team, make a little run and hold them off.”

Hamilton sank 3 of 4 free throws in the final minute, and Tomas Misiunas sank a foul shot after Wheaton North closed to within 42-40 with 26.9 seconds to go.

Hamilton finished with a team-high 12 points. Blust added 11, Eck tallied 10, Misiunas scored six and Michael Yaeger finished with five.

The win was the first of 2016 for Central, which returns to West Suburban Silver conference play against York on Jan. 22.
