Rafferty Leads Hinsdale Central to Consolation Championship

HILLSIDE, Ill. – Matt Rafferty scored 22 points to lead Hinsdale Central to a 52-42 victory over Fenwick in the consolation championship game of the Proviso West Holiday Tournament.
Hinsdale Central (10-3) took control of the game with a strong fourth quarter. The Red Devils led by six at the half, but Fenwick (10-3) surged back, grabbing a four-point lead after a Mike Ballard three-pointer capped an 8-0 run by the Friars in the third quarter. Hinsdale Central led 38-36 after three quarters.
Leading by just two points in the fourth quarter, the Red Devils ripped of a 10-0 run to blow the game open. Rafferty accounted for five of Hinsdale’s points in the run, helping Hinsdale close out the game with a 52-42 win.
Hinsdale Central earned its fourth trophy in Proviso West Holiday Tournament history, and its first consolation trophy since the 1965 season.
Hinsdale shot 47.8 percent (22-of-46) from the floor, including 33.3 percent (4-of-12) from downtown. The Red Devils dominated on the glass, outrebounding Fenwick 31-17. Hinsdale turned 15 offensive rebounds into 18 second-chance points.
Rafferty powered Hinsdale’s attack with 22 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists. George Kiernan added 13 points while Jordan Bradshaw scored seven.
Fenwick finished the game shooting 41.5 percent (17-of-41) from the floor and 40.0 percent (4-of-10) from three-point range.
Mike Smith led Fenwick in the loss with a game-high 24 points, shooting 9-of-18 in the contest. He added a game-high five steals in the loss. Jamal Nixon added nine points and Ballard scored seven.
