Red Devils to put their early season success to the test in weekend doubleheader -

A little nicked up heading into the season, the Hinsdale Central boys basketball team has slowly gotten back to full health.

With all of their pieces in place, now it’s time to see how the Red Devils stack up against two strong area teams.

Coming off a 59-51 victory over Downers Grove North to open West Suburban Silver conference action, Hinsdale Central will welcome Oak Park-River Forest Friday for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off. The Huskies were the league champions a year ago, finishing two games ahead of the Red Devils.

“They are very talented,” said Hinsdale Central coach Nick Latorre, who saw Oak Park play Saturday against Fenwick. “They’ve got size, they’ve got a couple of really quick guards and they’ve got shooters. They are the real deal.”

A non-conference matchup at Naperville Central follows on Saturday. The Redhawks, who recently beat Benet, feature 6-foot-9 center Nick Czarnowski.

“They have a big guy and two or three shooters,” the coach said. “They are very balanced and very well coached. It will be an interesting weekend to see how we adjust. They will be good tests, we will see where we are at.”

While Latorre said that his team is still a work in progress, the Red Devils are off to a 3-1 start with their only loss coming to De la Salle as part of the Hinsdale South tournament.

Against Downers Grove North, Brian Owens led the way with 20 points and five assists while Chase Hamilton added 18 points and five assists. Matt Rafferty chipped in with 15 points and 10 rebounds while Rigas Pappas rounded out the scoring with six points.

Another positive was the significant minutes played by Ian Bunting, who is working his way back from an ankle injury suffered during the football season.

“After the Hinsdale South game, our defense has improved,” Latorre said. “We have rebounded the ball very well and, offensively, we have been pretty balanced. But we can still play better in all of those areas.”
