Owens seals Hinsdale Central WSC Silver opener at Downers Grove North

DOWNERS GROVE — Hinsdale Central senior point guard Brian Owens loves having the ball in his hands during important situations.

He shined in that area Friday.

Owens scored a team-high 20 points to help the Red Devils beat host Downers Grove North 59-52 in the West Suburban Silver opener for both teams.

First, Owens drained back-to-back 3-pointers early in the third quarter to put Hinsdale Central (3-1) ahead for good at 30-28 and then he scored the Red Devils’ final eight points of the game by making all eight of his free-throw attempts.

“That’s what you practice for, situations like that,” Owens said. “Every time we need free throws in the end I want the ball in my hands.

“You want to win as many conference games as possible. We came out a little flat and didn’t play well defensively, but we picked it up and were able to get a win on the road.”

Hinsdale Central trailed 26-24 at halftime, but outscored Downers North (2-3) 18-8 in the third quarter and held on down the stretch by making 10-of-11 free throws in the fourth quarter.

The Red Devils also received strong efforts from Chase Hamilton (18 points, five assists, four steals) and Matt Rafferty (15 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks).

“(Downers North) is a good basketball team,” Hinsdale Central coach Nick Latorre said. “We were happy to get out of here with a win.”

Downers North was led by Nick Norton (22 points) and Deivis Skirgaila (15 points).
