Hinsdale Central Edges Glenbard West on Senior Night

February 15, 2012

Hinsdale Central’s senior boys basketball players were able to finish off their home careers on a high note Tuesday night, holding off Glenbard West on Senior Night in West Suburban Conference play.

The Red Devils (15-8, 7-4), rallied late to get by the Hilltoppers (15-7, 6-5) 56-50 in a closely contested game that featured many lead changes and tense moments. Glenbard West led by six at halftime, and it was only after many runs by both teams that Hinsdale Central took the lead for good late in the fourth, led by senior forward Tom Garvin, who scored nine of his 13 points in the fourth.

Red Devils head coach Nick Latorre didn’t think his team played as well as they are capable of doing, but praised them for gutting out the win.

“We played ugly, but we were able to persevere through an ugly game,” Latorre said. “But I think the mark of a good team is to be able to not play your best and still get the victory.”

Despite the sometimes ugly play, the team’s seniors were happy with the way the game turned out.

“It was a huge game for our team," said Garvin said,. “Not only because it was Senior Night, but because we knew we were going up against a really good team.”

Garvin called the game an “all-around team effort”, and also gave credit to all of the fans that came out to support the team, especially Red Nation, the Hinsdale Central student section.

Other contributors for the Red Devils included senior guard Peter Thaus with 10 points, junior point guard Brian Owens with 12 points, and sophomore forward Ian Bunting with nine points off the bench. Brad Anlauf added in seven points despite some early foul trouble.

The Red Devils will finish off their conference schedule this Friday against Lyons Township followed by a crossover game against a team to be announced from the West Suburban Gold Feb. 22. State basketball playoffs will begin with the Regional rounds played at the end of February.
